Elon Musk praises Samsung chip gains
Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk announced that Samsung Foundry will manufacture the company’s AI5 chips alongside TSMC. Musk stated during the third-quarter earnings call that Samsung’s Taylor facility in Texas is operating slightly ahead of TSMC’s Arizona plant. The AI5 chips deliver up to 40 times better performance than the AI4 generation by removing legacy graphics processing components and adding specialized artificial intelligence accelerators. Samsung previously secured orders for Tesla’s AI6 chips using its 2-nanometer process technology.
Musk said he wants an oversupply of AI5 chips, which requires Samsung to increase production capacity at the Taylor location. The AI5 design features a larger package with more accelerator units and expanded on-chip memory. Tesla previously manufactured these chips exclusively at TSMC before expanding to Samsung. The partnership gives Samsung significant exposure in the American semiconductor manufacturing market.
