FF7 Rebirth dev defends yellow paint use
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi acknowledged the ongoing debate over the use of yellow paint markers in games, but argued that such guidance is often necessary. In an interview with GamesRadar+, he stated that developers sometimes need to show players what actions are possible or required, especially in large and complex worlds.
Hamaguchi emphasized that the core issue lies not in whether guidance is needed, but in how it is implemented. He noted that while some players strongly oppose visual indicators, such as yellow paint, others benefit from them. He believes the solution lies in finding the right balance and level of subtlety. With the third and final game in the Remake trilogy expected to be even more expansive, his team faces the challenge of maintaining accessibility without compromising player freedom. Many fans have suggested offering optional toggles to disable such cues, a feature already available through mods on PC but largely absent on consoles.
