India to grow at 6.6% in 2026, leading global economy
India will maintain its position as the fastest-growing major economy with 6.6 percent expansion in 2026, while China slows to 4.8 percent, the International Monetary Fund projected. The South Asian nation benefits from rising consumer spending, manufacturing recovery and services sector strength as global growth decelerates to 3.1 percent.
The IMF forecasts that advanced economies will grow just 1.6 percent as trade disruptions from American tariffs affect global commerce. China faces demographic pressures, elevated debt and property sector weakness that undermine economic momentum.
Economists say India must convert expansion into jobs, poverty reduction, and investments in infrastructure, schools, and medical care. The coming years will determine whether growth translates to productivity gains, employment absorption and workforce training that produce lasting benefits.
