John Romero hunts new backer after Xbox cut
Romero Games lost its publishing agreement with Microsoft after recent workforce reductions, but retained full rights to its unfinished project. The studio had completed half the game before the partnership ended, with development costs reaching approximately 50 million dollars.
Multiple publishers have expressed interest in funding the remaining work. Assets created before the cancellation reduce production time and expenses for potential partners or alternative projects.
John Romero confirmed the development status at an event in Malaga. The veteran designer previously created influential shooters such as Doom and Quake before establishing his current studio, which released Empire of Sin in 2020.
