Letshego CEO champions inclusive banking for every Ugandan
Giles Aijukwe leads Letshego Uganda with a focus on expanding banking services to citizens traditionally excluded from the financial system. The chief executive describes his approach as transformational rather than transactional, emphasizing that access to loans and savings represents a matter of personal dignity for market vendors, motorcycle taxi operators and other underserved populations. His institution aims to demonstrate that these customers represent untapped potential rather than excessive risk.
The banking leader pushed early for aggressive digital expansion despite staff concerns about job security and customer worries about reliability. That decision enabled the company to reach more clients at reduced costs while maintaining transparency. Aijukwe says boardroom discussions have shifted from conventional metrics toward measuring impact on farmers, teachers and informal workers. He credits listening skills with helping him become more patient and strategic during periods of organizational change.
Morning reflection and family time help the executive maintain balance amid leadership pressures. He draws inspiration from Spencer Johnson’s work about adapting to disruption. Aijukwe expresses optimism about young Ugandans who are already shaping the future through energy and innovation, noting that customers frequently transform small loans into successful enterprises.
