Miramax digs up Monster Mash movie
Miramax plans to adapt the 1962 Halloween hit “Monster Mash” into an animated musical film. Chief Executive Jonathan Glickman secured adaptation rights from Reservoir and Capizzi Music Co. for the track that Bobby Pickett and Lenny Capizzi wrote in less than two hours.
The song has generated over 500 million streams globally and earns approximately $1 million per year in royalties. Its narrative follows a mad scientist whose creature performs a dance at a monster gathering with characters such as the Wolfman and Dracula. The lyrics provide a foundation for visual storytelling that requires additional plot development.
Glickman previously produced Wednesday for Netflix and The Addams Family animated features. A recent UCLA study shows animation attracts stronger engagement from younger viewers. The project represents a trend of studios converting musical properties into films, though most recent adaptations have focused on biographical stories rather than expanding song narratives.
