Spotify adds detailed credits and new features for fans
Spotify has expanded its song credit system to recognize all contributors involved in music production, moving beyond the previous focus on headlining performers, songwriters and producers. The streaming platform will display background vocalists, session musicians and audio engineers among other participants, with the company stating that comprehensive crediting strengthens listener engagement while potentially distinguishing human-created works from AI-generated content.
Premium subscribers will gain access to two additional features called SongDNA and About the Song. The former maps artistic connections through samples, covers and shared collaborators using data from WhoSampled, while the latter presents contextual information about track origins through swipeable cards. Artists can preview and verify accuracy through Spotify for Artists before public launch.
Mix engineer Manny Marroquin and producer Mike Dean endorsed the initiative, noting that proper attribution creates professional opportunities and recalls the liner notes tradition from physical media formats.
