Swiggy blunder as veg biryani order gets meat swap
An entrepreneur who runs a startup discovered non-vegetarian food inside his delivery package after requesting a meatless biryani through the platform operated by Swiggy. Angel investor Udit Goenka warned the delivery service about potential legal action and threatened to file a consumer court case if the company failed to address his complaint.
Goenka posted about the mix-up on X and said he had placed an order with Behrouz Biryani for a vegetarian dish but received meat-based biryani instead. The restaurant brand responded with an apology and asked him to send order details through direct messaging. Multiple commenters on the social media platform suggested he should avoid requesting vegetarian options from establishments that primarily serve meat dishes.
Similar incidents involving these companies have occurred previously. Consumer dispute panels in Telangana and Punjab imposed penalties totaling 60,000 rupees on Swiggy and Behrouz Biryani after finding they delivered meat products to vegetarian customers. The delivery platform reported a consolidated net loss of 1,092 crore rupees for the quarter that ended in September, compared with a 626 crore rupee loss during the corresponding period one year earlier.
