Tiny PS5 Redux mod improves cooling, shrinks size
A modder has created an improved compact version of Sony’s PlayStation 5 that addresses cooling problems from an earlier design while maintaining full functionality. The YouTube creator Not From Concentrate documented the construction process in a video released earlier this week.
The updated model fixes issues that plagued the original modification, which reduced the console’s dimensions by approximately 60 percent but suffered from power supply problems and elevated operating temperatures. The new aluminum housing allows visibility into internal components while preserving access to USB connections, power controls, and disc ejection. A built-in carrying handle facilitates portability.
Temperature management represents the most significant upgrade. The builder retained stock heatsink plates but added an Alpenföhn Black Ridge processor cooler paired with two 120 mm Noctua fans arranged in push-pull formation. Three additional 60 mm Noctua fans expel hot air through vents in the handle. Testing with Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 showed average temperatures around 56 degrees Celsius, compared with 59 degrees for unmodified hardware. The creator has published detailed instructions for users who want to attempt similar modifications with compatible PlayStation 5 models.
