TSMC thrives as key player in GPU-ASIC clash
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. does not view the competition between graphics processing unit makers and custom chip developers as a concern because both sides rely on the company’s manufacturing services. Chief Executive C.C. Wei said on the company’s third-quarter earnings call that customers from both segments use its advanced production technology and are expected to grow substantially in the coming years.
Major technology companies building their specialized artificial intelligence processors depend on TSMC’s facilities. Google develops its tensor processing units with Broadcom using TSMC foundries, while Amazon’s Trainium and Microsoft’s Maia chips also use the manufacturer’s 5-nanometer processes and smaller nodes. The company provides both production and packaging services to these clients, positioning itself as a central supplier regardless of how the market evolves between traditional GPU manufacturers and custom silicon developers.
