SpaceX nears satellite deal with Apple
SpaceX updated its Starlink satellite designs to support Apple iPhone radio frequencies as the smartphone maker prepares satellite-based 5G connectivity by 2026. Apple currently relies on Globalstar for emergency messaging services but has invested $2 billion in the struggling provider. Globalstar chairman James Monroe recently discussed selling his company for more than $10 billion amid competition with Starlink’s market dominance.
SpaceX acquired EchoStar’s wireless spectrum last month for $17 billion to deliver faster phone internet globally. President Gwynne Shotwell said the company partners with chipmakers to integrate satellite connectivity into smartphones. Elon Musk proposed an exclusive partnership with Apple in 2022, requiring $5 billion upfront plus $1 billion annually after 18 months. Apple rejected the offer.
Tensions between Musk and Apple CEO Tim Cook persist after xAI sued the technology giant, alleging it manipulated App Store rankings against its Grok chatbot. Apple avoids purchasing Globalstar to escape carrier regulations and has not charged users for satellite services. The Information reports that SpaceX now supports iPhone spectrum as both companies edge toward cooperation despite past conflicts.
