NAAPE fires back at Kalu on pilots drug claim
Nigerian pilots demanded Senator Orji Uzor Kalu retract statements he made to lawmakers claiming aviators use Indian hemp and fly planes while intoxicated. The National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers called the allegations false and harmful to professional reputations. Engineer Blessing Ahmadu said the remarks misrepresent strict safety protocols that regulate flight operations across the country.
Captain Bunmi Gindeh said medical screening procedures meet international standards through regular testing and oversight by the Civil Aviation Authority. The association asked Kalu to either provide evidence to regulators or publicly apologize to aviation workers. Pilots undergo psychological evaluations and toxicology checks as part of certification requirements aligned with global aviation rules.
The group said isolated misconduct cases receive immediate disciplinary response from authorities. Nigerian air transport maintains strong safety records through adherence to protocols and continuous training programs. Association officials invited the senator to meet with stakeholders and learn about comprehensive frameworks governing pilot qualifications and operational standards.
